The next few nights in Hell were disturbingly relaxed. The sky was clear in the day, and concealed in mists the moment the moon rose. Strangely, as though stunned to silence, there had been no midnight raids. No fires had been lit and no homes destroyed; no prisoners taken and no one had died. The Mortician's was a dormant ghost on the sky scape.
In the shadows inside the office, Ronnie stirred. He had pushed his way in through a back window. He crouched just below the desk, trapped in the dark space, with his feet firmly on the closed trap door. Away from Rex's pistol and Sammi's plotting, it was a safe and silent place to think.

The Mortician's Office was a dreamy landscape. The chair and desk were twisted into the floor. Andy couldn't find Carolyn anywhere, although when he caught his reflection in a broken mirror, he was wearing her hat. And a strange shiny waistcoat with tiny silver rivets around the edge. He was stood staring when there was a violent knock at the door. He staggered over and opened it a tiny fraction. Sammi was standing on the opposite side with her friends Rex and Ronnie. Andy frowned for a minute. He was sure he could remember the twins once trying to set his hair alight; a scar that still smarted even today.

I'm a big fan of Edward Gorey, and recently bought some more books. Now I have 'The Doubtful Guest', 'The Gashlycrumb Tinies', 'The Blue Aspic', 'The West Wing' and 'The Epileptic Bicycle'. So I decided I'd like to do a little tribute to him, but in my own style.

I chose the creature from 'The Doubtful Guest' and modernised him.

And humanified, of course.
I tried to get the look of Gorey's cross-hatching on his trousers.
I want an urn backpack.

I have a theory that the creature in the book is actually a metaphor for a teenager.

I thought the bag and the figure would look too alike. So I changed it last minute and instead draw the creature wandering around his feet.
