Life Becomes a War

Jinxx exploded out of the cave mouth in a flurry of black feathers and ash. Andy stared, horrified by the scene before them. The edge of the forest was a toasted wasteland, burned and scorched to within an inch of life. They could see at once that three of the Invasion had been killed. Their bodies were turning to cinders in the still blazing grass.
From behind a smouldering tree trunk, Carolyn crept on her hands and knees, still clutching the thin glass needle. Jake and Ashley had been driven together, and were standing back-to-back against the attackers. Ashley slashed through the air at them with whips of fire that set even more of the land alight.
Andy didn't hear Jinxx mutter, if he had said anything at all. Suddenly he was gone from Andy's side, scrambling up the cave wall and springing headfirst into the middle of the battle. Ashley quickly withdrew the flames as Jinxx skipped and dodged between them
Jake couldn't hide the relief on his face. "Thank goodness! At last!! You're here!!"

"Took your bloody time!!" Ashley cursed with a raging fist.

Jinxx didn't reply. He seemed oblivious to their cry at all. He sprawled on the floor, cautious as a cat preparing to pounce, and eyed the monstrous women. They stood advancing, and stood with their traps, clubs, swords and bows halted in their hands. Slowly, Jinxx raised himself up onto his feet. Still he watched, waiting.
"Now, you're dead!" Ashley cried, flames starting again. But Jinxx held out a single hand for quiet. Ash hovered on the brink of a charge, and for a second they thought he would ignore him. But he paused, balancing on one set of toes; the sharpest tip of his boots. Jinxx lowered his hand to his side once again.
The Invasion was almost entranced. No one on either side moved. They all waited with baited breath for the next move from this strange being. After what seemed an age, one of their attackers broke the silence; "You really think you can win with just three of you?!"
Jinxx smiled (possibly) and for the first time Andy saw his mouth open. The pink of his tongue was alien against the black lips. "You miscounted." He whispered. His voice was quiet, but it hissed off the rocks around and was magnified. "There are four of us now." He turned back, looked straight at Andy in the shadows of the cave, and held out a hand.
It took a few seconds for him to realise what was going on. He saw Jinxx' hand extend to him and it was as though a light had suddenly flickered inside his head. They needed him. He was a part of their team. Team Angel. Wings or no wings. In white or black. Something was taking over inside; a powerful dark mass of energy that propelled him forward. Before he knew it he was standing at Jinxx' feet, fists clenched and glaring down into the eye of the enemy. They were laughing to themselves - an angel? No more than a kid, surely! – But he didn't care. He really didn't care anymore.
The power was rising, from deep inside, just as Jake had showed him in the Temple's dungeons. It raced up his spine, to the back of his throat, and he opened his mouth.
His scream literally shook the earth. Carolyn was rocked back from her stance against the rock. She crawled up on top of it, clinging as the ground beneath rumbled. Andy held the scream with no effort.  The Invasion also suddenly found it hard to hold their weapons and stand. At the same time Jinxx began to mumble. They weren't words but sounds, as though he wasn't speaking but making music with his lips. His hands glowed. It was as though he was getting inside their very skulls. Weapons dropped as hands were turned to their heads and they covered their ears, shrinking in pain. They began to run, back towards what still remained of the trees.
"Now?" Ash asked, still poised on his toes.
Jake squinted. "…Now."
Ashley stepped forward, and threw a massive bolt of fire after them as easy as he would bowl a ball. They saw it rage and crackle through branches and leaves, spreading into the green like poison into blood.
Andy forced his mouth shut to stop the scream. It fought against his teeth for a moment, then slunk back down his throat. He held his fingers clasped over his lips, and dropped down onto his knees. He was trembling, but not from fear – it was excitement. Every inch of his body tingled with excitement. A more wonderful feeling had never been felt before by anyone.
Carolyn staggered back over the smoking grass. She was shaking too. "That," she said, her hair standing up on end, "was AWESOME."
Jinxx closed his eyes and turned to Andy. His mouth was once again closed and invisible, but his cheeks seemed to be smiling. He went to offer and helping hand up, but in a second it was swept away. Ashley and Jake pounced on top of him, knocking him to the ground.
"We missed you, buddy!" Jake laughed.
"Yeah," Ashley joined him, sitting on Jinxx' back between the wings and rubbing the top of his head with his knuckles, "and what was with all that hiding crap? You knew it was only us!"
Jinxx gave a tiny groan, more from pain than for an answer.
"You could have saved us a whole load of time!" Jake added.
Andy put his hand to his neck. He could still feel the bruises of the fingers where they'd held him down.

Had Jinxx waited a moment longer, then it would have been the end for sure.

"And you!" Ashley stopped rubbing Jinxx' head to point directly at him. Andy jumped. "No more secret powers!"
"Huh?"
"You know; that scream! Why didn't you say you could do that! Did you feel the floor shaking? – It was soooooo cool!"
Andy shrugged. "I didn't really know I could."
"Well, that's it! No more secrets from now on! That's the rules of being a tribe!" Ashley swivelled his legs over Jinxx' wings and stood up. Jinxx stopped struggling and rested his cheek on the ground. He realised a sigh of relief.
"A tribe?" Carolyn frowned. She had the doctor's bag open on her lap and was trying to wash the soot from her face. Ashley had been a little over-zealous on the burning-stuff approach. "Is that what we are?"
"You know, like a team. A posse. A group. A cliché."
"You mean clique."  Jake corrected.
Ashley glared. "I KNOW what I mean!! Amigos; a band of brothers!"
"And what does that make me then?" She asked in a barbed voice. "Where exactly do I sit in your grand scheme of things? What position do I fill?"
Ashley had started to chuckle before she had finished. "I dunno… The group's friendly neighbourhood bicycle?" Jake and Jinxx began to laugh. Andy blinked, puzzled. Carolyn pouted, grabbed the nearest thing and launched it through the air at him. The needle whizzed straight over his shoulder and stuck upright in the ground. It had missed him by centimetres.
"Will they come back? The Invasion?" Andy asked, looking up to Jake.
Jake glared into the distance. "Oh, they'll be back. They always come back."
"We should have finished the job!" Ashley growled, pummelling the earth with his boots. The glass needle smashed under his heel.
Jake shook his head. "Not strong enough yet. There's still one more piece of the puzzle left…"
"Do you get a kick from speaking in riddles?!"
"Jinxx!" Jake shouted over his shoulder. Jinxx glanced silently upwards. "Where did C.C fall? You must have seen him, right?"

Jinxx frowned at the sky, scratching the side of his head. Then he raised one finger and pointed in the opposite direction. Past the city ruins, the forest gradually ran into flat grass land. Then stabbing up at the sky like giant teeth was a ridge of ominous looking mountains; capped in snow and cloaked in clouds. "Over there." He whispered. "Between those two points."

"Well that sure looks like a barrel of laughs." Ashley groaned, deflating. "Couldn't he have fallen a little closer – damn him!"
Carolyn tapped Andy's toes. "You ok?" She asked.
Andy didn't reply at first. His mouth was slightly open; his eyes were blinking and hands still trembling. "Ok?" He repeated, looking up. Carolyn recoiled. He leapt to his feet. "Ok doesn't cover it! I feel… I feel… Great! I actually feel great! Did you see them run? They were scared of me!!" She backed away, her face stricken white. "I want to do it again. I want to scream as much as I can! Scream at them all! Blow them all away!" He clenched his fist. "If they even dare think I'm theirs now, then they'd better watch out! Otherwise, I'll… Hey." He stopped and watched her. "What's up?"
"Your eyes."
"What about them?"
She shook her head. "No… never mind. It's probably nothing… Just…" He grabbed her arm. She leaned up on her tiptoes to reach his ear. "For a second, they looked like hers." She said nothing more. He was even more puzzled now than before. He watched her back as she bent to pick up the pieces of the shattered glass. The doctors' bag lay close by, the contents spilling out onto the earth.

------------------------------------

Over the mountain top the wind was churning the clouds up into a tempest. The sun had been setting, and had painted them red. Sammi stood on the top floor of the Mortician's, staring out of the window in a frightened silence. She knew it wouldn't be long now. The aristocrats had been moved from their houses – their windows were boarded up. She could see torches being lit in the grounds of the Temple. She gulped.
Rex closed in behind her and squeezed his face out of the windowpane. "What's going on now?"
"I really don't know." Her voice cracked into a sob. "I thought they'd be here by now! Don't they know we haven't got time left?"
He placed a hand on her shoulder. "You're confusing me."
"I've been watching the sky. Angels fall from the sky, right?" She cast a worried glance at him. He saw her eyes brim with tears. She gave a sniff and turned back. "I'm waiting. We'll have to do something soon. The attack is coming, and we're going to lose."
"You don't know that."
"Look." She hissed and stuck a finger out into the open air. He squinted at the fires. "I think it will be tonight."
He bit his bottom lip. "What about Ronnie?" She took her leave from the window and walked over towards the cupboard that held Carolyn's idol. The red shone against Rex's face. "I can't be without him."
"I know." She breathed. Cautiously, she opened the cabinet doors. "But what more can we do?"
He stepped behind her again and looked to the skull's face. "Do you think she knows where he is?"
"I should hope so. If she's got no clue then we've got no chance."
He leaned over and looped his arms around her shoulders. He leaned his chin down until the skin of his cheek tickled hers. He closed his eyes. "I miss him." He whispered. She nodded, and raised a hand. Her fingers gently stroked his hair.
"I miss him too."
They stayed like that in silence for a moment of quiet. She could feel his gun against his leg. He refused to be without it now, especially since Ronnie had been taken. Her heart bounded. She hadn't said anything to Rex; she didn't want to worry him anymore than he already was. But deep down she had a sinking feeling that that was what had happened. Her eyelids slipped open to look into the doll's eyes.
The back of the skull must have been painted black a long time ago. As she opened them, she could see a distant light reflecting, growing bigger and bigger. She opened her eyes fully and watched as within a matter of seconds the whole skull was lit in orange. The shadows swept across the walls.
There was a roaring noise from outside.
"Rex…?"

CRASH!!!!

The building shook on its foundations. She shrieked. Rex clutched her closer. "What the hell was that??!"
Sammi broke out from his arms and sprinted to the window. She threw the glass open wide and leaned out… The neighbourhood was burning. The residents were scattering beneath like ants, away from the block a few streets ahead… that was now gone. Nothing remained but a burning wasteland. Sammi gave a shriek and ducked back.
"What happened?!"
Rex's face filled with fear and he seized her elbow. "Sammi, I think we should get out… NOW!"
He dragged her towards the steps before she could engage her feet, and then the world disappeared into a mass of chaos. Floorboards splintered and the room filled with thick, black smoke. Rex and Sammi were half way down the stairs when they were thrown onto the shaking floor. Sammi screamed. The ceiling of the bottom floor, Carolyn's office, caved in. Rex and Sammi ducked, covering their heads.
"Direct hit!" Rex muttered over the roaring. Sammi could barely speak – the ash and smoke were clogging up her throat and scorching the roof of her mouth. She spluttered and coughed out a selection of noises and hope he would understand. He clutched at her arm, and they crawled through the rubble. The stairs crumbled behind them. They fought their way to the door and threw their weight against it. They fell out onto the street in a black cloud.
"Sammi! Quick! Come away!" Rex ran her to the other side of the street. There was no air that was clear, nothing to breathe. She turned and looked back. There was a massive chunk missing from the top floor of the Mortician's, and the rest was falling to flames. They watched, petrified. In their eyes, the realisation that the Mortician's was slowly disappearing in smoke was taking hold. Rex placed his hands at either side of her face and forced her gaze away from the wreckage. "The Gunsling, Sammi! We'll be safe there!"
The whizzing sound started again. They looked to the sky. Giant, flaming balls were being catapulted through the air, raining down on Hell and the surrounding hills like falling stars. Falling angels.
Sammi took Rex's hand and together they raced down through the streets and the panic.
Behind them, they heard a battle cry. Sammi's heart sank.

This was it. Everything was over.
